Robert Trent Jones' Design

Inspired by the varied topography of the preserve, Robert Trent Jones and his chief designer and top aide, Roger Rulewich, created a 27-hole masterpiece of tree-lined fairways, well-placed bunkers to maximize accuracy and the subtly contoured greens for which Jones is internationally known. Typical of all Jones' creations, the development of water as a playing hazard is a strategic consideration on seven holes at Metedeconk National. Extensive and multiple tee boxes—another Jones trademark—allow for unlimited flexibility and permit the course to be played at yardages ranging from approximately 5,200 to 7,400+. From the championship tees, our Tournament course has a rating of 76.4 and a slope index of 152 with a par of 72. Masterfully routed, the three nines of our private course embrace this region of New Jersey’s natural wilderness. Almost every hole is an entity unto itself. The proximity of marsh and lowland pine forest throughout provides a delightful dividend to golfers who may be fortunate enough to be joined on their round by the occasional deer, fox, muskrat or circling hawk who continue to make Metedeconk their home.

Many courses start with a straightforward, easy hole. That’s not the case at Metedeconk. The tee shot here requires accuracy. The further you try to hit it, the more accurate you have to be. The player must be mindful of the deep bunker on the left side of the fairway. If you have the power, fire away. Play your tee shot too far right and you risk running out of room rather quickly and playing your second from the trees. You must navigate a bunker fronting the right side of the green and a tricky false front left on your approach shot. If the pin is in the back left on the small plateau, you have to play short as long creates a difficult par.

Practice Facility

  • Our 50-Acre Practice Area
    • The total size of the practice facility is an impressive 50 acres. The site has two tees, one exclusively for members and the other for members and their guests. Golfers may fire at six target greens set at varying distances along with two well-defined fairways.

  • Short Game Area
    • The facility also has a short-game area that can be stretched as far as 150 yards, with three target greens, several bunkers, and a massive practice green. The sand in the bunkers is the same consistency as that on the course, and the practice green runs as true and fast.

  • Fairway Bunkers & Uneven Lies
    • Players also may utilize a fairway bunker; as well as practice fairway, where uphill, downhill and side-hill lies may be replicated. The golf professionals operate a teaching center from a small structure on the facility and also do their club fitting there, employing the latest technological advances for both.
